24 years later, the Olympic Games were back to Paris, the home city of
Pierre de Coubertin. Meanwhile, the world had dramatically changed and
the 1924 edition of the Games was the first to feature Ireland as an
independent country. In addition, the famous Olympic motto Ciutis, Altius, Fortius was used for the first time, as well as the Olympic Village as a location for all the partecipating athletes.

Among them, Finnish Paavo Nurmi stood as he won five gold medals in
athletics, a record which still resists nowadays. Harold Abrahams and
Eric Liddell deserve a mention, too; they won the 100 and the 400 metres
respectively and, above all, their personal stories are the main theme
in the famous film Chariots of Fire. Furthermore, it was in
Paris in 1924 that a 50-metre pool, marked by lanes, was used as a venue
for swimming races and the first Winter Olympic Games were staged. Read more
