Amsterdam won their bid for hosting the Olympic Games after several
attempts. The first one took place for the 1912 edition, even before the
establishment of the Netherlands Olympic Committee in 1916, but
Stockholm was chosen in the end. Following the break due to World War I,
the Dutch city had to renounce again, since it was agreed to stage the
Olympics in Antwerp. Then, Paris was given the organisation of the
Games, only on the condition the 1928 would be hosted by Amsterdam.
The edition held in the Netherlands coincided with important
innovations such as the Olympic torch, the 16-day standard schedule of
the entire event and the presence of the first official sponsors such as
Coca-Cola. Furthermore, the parade of the nations on the opening day
started with Greece and ended with the hosting country, a tradition
which still exists nowadays.
More importantly, Germany was allowed to
participate after the ban for the 1920 and 1924 editions. Their presence
would turn out to be particularly significative in several sports, and
water polo belongs to this list. The competition lasted one week, from 4
to 11 August, and was staged at the Olympic Sports Park Swim Stadium.
14 national teams entered the tournament, with Argentina, Luxembourg and
Malta making their debut. The format was the same established in the
past editions, with a knock-out tournament split in first round,
quarter-finals, semi-finals and final match, plus an additional
mini-tournament for the bronze medal.
