British fans are focused on the return of Team GB in men’s water polo,
for the last time the Union Jack appeared inside a swimming pool was in
Melbourne 1956. Still, the eyes of all “football in the water” fans are
just on Hungary, who can – and crave to – make history, and Serbia, who
faced each other in the opening match day of the water polo tournament
at London 2012.

The Magyars are the only national team, alongside Great Britain, to
have become Olympic gold medallist three times in a row so far. An
eventual triumph in London would seal an unprecedented record and the
Hungarians are renowned for meticulously training themselves in sight of
the Olympics.
The London Games have begun without great upsets, yet picking the
main favourite for the final victory turns out to be a matter for
diviners. You may say Hungary due to the aforementioned reasons, but in
the last international competitions same old Croatia and Serbia have
confirmed to represent the èlite of water polo, whereas Italy have come
back to their glorious days as they won the World Championships in
Shanghai last year.
Croatia and Greece
were the first two teams to perform in the Water Polo Arena. It was a
balanced encounter to open the tournament, as the team coached by guru
Ratko Rudić beat Greece 8-6. The outcome of the match was uncertain
until the start of the last period, as the two duellists were drawing
5-5. Under the guidance of Serbian Dragan Antić, Greece aim to come up
again as the team who surprisingly emerged in the first half of the
decade with a shining bronze medal at the 2005 World Championships. Read more:
